AI Technology Makes Scams More Convincing for Web3 Workers
Cado Security Labs has uncovered an alarming new scam that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create highly convincing fake websites and social media profiles. These AI-generated platforms are designed to deceive Web3 professionals in the blockchain, cryptocurrency, and decentralized finance industries. The scammers replicate trusted websites and business profiles, making it nearly impossible for individuals to distinguish between legitimate platforms and fake ones. AI technology allows these fake websites to closely mirror actual business environments, making the scam more difficult to identify and increasing the likelihood of victims engaging with the malicious platforms.
Malware Apps “Meeten” and “Meetio” Steal Data from Victims
The scam begins when the fraudsters reach out to their targets, encouraging them to download a meeting app called “Meeten” or “Meetio.” These apps, while appearing to be legitimate, contain malware that, once installed, begins scanning the victim’s device for sensitive data. The malware searches for cryptocurrency wallet credentials, Telegram login details, and banking information, along with browser cookies and autofill credentials. This data is then harvested and used by the scammers to steal financial information and personal data, potentially leading to identity theft, financial loss, and further exploitation.
Web3 Professionals Urged to Avoid Unsolicited Software Downloads
Given the growing sophistication of AI-driven scams, Web3 professionals are urged to remain vigilant when downloading software or engaging with online platforms. The fake websites and apps used by scammers appear legitimate, making it difficult for even the most cautious individuals to detect the fraud. To avoid falling victim to these scams, professionals should verify the legitimacy of any app or website before interacting with it. It is always best to be cautious about unsolicited software and to ensure that any platform or tool being used is from a trusted source.
